Know-Your-Rights Session with Pan-African Workers Association

March 2026

Know Your Rights for Care Workers Event

Yarmouth Workers Project held a joint event with the Industrial Workers of the World union (IWW) and the Pan African Workers Association (PAWA). We had a Know Yours Rights at work session for Care Workers where 20 people attended. It was great hearing about our basic rights at work, and sharing the experiences and challenges we all face.

People spoke about:

  • Low wages and high demands from management for such important work
  • Not being paid for travel time and not being given enough time to travel between jobs
  • Having to spend more time updating systems than looking after their clients.

We all agreed that by coming together through a union we could fight to make some of these things better for care workers and their clients.

At the event there were free activities for kids so that parents could attend, and everyone enjoyed an excellent lunch with BBQ chicken and veg curry. This was followed by 3 care workers sharing some writing they had done for Notes from Below about their experiences of work – they were engaging, inspiring and very funny!

Great food, great company and great atmosphere.
